Dr. Sunera Thobani named Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Thobani, along with nine other UBC faculty, have been announced by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) as new Fellows. The fellowship of the RSC comprises over 2,000 Canadian scholars, artists, and scientists, peer-elected as the best in their field. These are distinguished individuals from all branches of learning who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life.

Dr. Sunera Thobani's new edited book sheds light on the effects of Covid-19 for racially marginalized communities
Congratulations to Dr. Sunera Thobani for the release of her edited publication The Deadly Intersections of Covid-19: Race, States, Inequalities and Global Society! This pioneering book demonstrates the disproportionate impact of of state responses to COVID-19 on racially marginalized communities.

Dr. Bruce Fulton featured on the cover of one of the most respected literary journals in Korea, Munhak sasang (Literature and Thought)
We are delighted to share that Dr. Bruce Fulton is featured on the cover of the September issue of Munhak sasang (Literature and Thought), one of the most respected literary journals in Korea. This edition of the journal includes an interview with Dr. Fulton, where he speaks about his and his wife's translation of One Left--the first Korean novel to focus on Korean "comfort women" of the Pacific War.

Instructor Spotlight: Yi-yi Chen: "Flying Students' Dreams on Top of Literature"
As the new academic year begins, we welcome Yi-yi Chen, our newest visiting lecturer in the Chinese Language Program. Dr. Chen is keen on inspiring her students to set out on journeys of lifelong learning alongside literature, summing up her teaching philosophy as “flying students’ dreams on top of literature.” In this Spotlight, we asked professor Chen to share some of her teaching experiences and pedagogical methods.

A Sense of an Ending: Chinese Buddhist Eschatology Reconsidered

[Webinar] Becoming Communities: The Changing Face of Community Activism in Hong Kong

Ikkyū and the Crazy Cloud Anthology: Then and Now

This lecture will explore selected translations of the Kyōunshū 狂雲集 (Crazy Cloud Anthology), an anthology of poems in literary Chinese by medieval Rinzai monk Ikkyū Sōjun 休宗純 (1394-1481). The readings will concentrate on poems from Ikkyū’s later years spent during the catastrophic Ōnin War (1467-1477).

Japanese Language Program welcomes Kyoai Gakuen University students with cultural exchange event
This past summer, the Japanese Language program welcomed 8 students from Kyoai Gakuen University in Japan for a cultural exchange event with students from UBC's beginner Japanese courses. Together, everyone enjoyed a campus tour, a Japanese cultural workshop, and some group activities.

Webinar on Chinese Language Technology for Research and Education
This past July, Dr. Joanna Ut-Seong Sio and Dr. Luís Morgado da Costa from Palacký University Olomouc were invited to present a webinar titled Chinese Language Technology for Research and Education. Together, they shared their current projects focusing on linguistic research and their application to teaching and learning Sinitic languages like Mandarin and Cantonese.
