On December 2, 2022, the Cantonese Language Program hosted a popular culture and performance workshop featuring Anson Kong (江𤒹生), the vice-captain of Hong Kong’s popular Cantopop boy group, Mirror, along with the ViuTV crew during their Vancouver auditions for their top-rating TV show King Maker (全民造星) Season 5.

Learning from and with the local Cantonese community: Outreach events with Hong Kong House
With the goal of connecting students with the Cantonese community in Vancouver, the Cantonese Language Program partnered with a volunteer collective called Hong Kong House to co-organize a plethora of activities in April and May 2023.

During May, the BC Japanese Language Teachers Information Exchange Meeting brought together Japanese Language teachers from BC’s high schools and universities. Language educators from both levels shared teaching techniques and gained insights of each other’s teaching styles to together support high-school-to-university transition.

Roaming freely among the Arts: Highlights from the UBC Undergraduate Conference of Chinese Studies 3MT 2023
The Undergraduate Conference of Chinese Studies 3-Minute Thesis Competition 2023 (UCCS 3MT 2023) came to a close this March, where 32 contestants unleashed their creativity through research using fresh, thought-provoking, and analytical literary perspectives. The event was an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to share and discuss their research interests, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and more.

Apply for the UBC Open Access Fund for Humanities and Social Sciences Research
The UBC Open Access Fund for Humanities and Social Sciences Research assists UBC faculty members who wish to publish in Open Access books and journals who are required to pay associated fees (APC’s). Approximately $75,000 is available annually and $4,000 maximum is available to an individual author or individual work each academic year. The fund takes applications starting on September 1 until all funding is depleted.
Call for proposal: NACHE Conference
The North American Chapter on the History of Emotion (NACHE) will be holding its next conference June 7-8, 2024, on the UBC Vancouver campus. Interested scholars are invited to submit proposals for single presentations or for panels. The conference is open to proposals dealing with any region or time period, and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. Apply by September 15.
Call for application: 2023 Partnership Recognition and Exploration Fund
The 2023 Partnership Recognition and Exploration (PRE) Fund is currently accepting applications for projects that advance inclusion, Indigenous engagement, health, community, sustainability, teaching, learning, or research excellence. Get up to $1,500 for community-university collaboration and relationship building. Applications are open until December 31, or until all funding is depleted.
